The Great Trade Hypothesis

From The Portal Wiki

The Great Trade Hypothesis is Eric Weinstein's claim that the post-World-War-II West traded vitality for thermonuclear peace. In his talk at ARC in March, 2025, he says the trade was real and precious: the relevant institutions helped avoid thermonuclear war after November 1952. But he also says the trade ended in January 2025, leaving the West to regain vitality without assuming the old order still protects it.

Eric's Usage[edit]

Eric uses the phrase to avoid a simple denunciation of the postwar order. The bargain was costly, in his telling, because Europe and the broader West became devitalized, infantilized, and detached from war memory. But it also bought the extraordinary achievement that no thermonuclear weapon has been used in anger. The problem in 2025 is that people still behave as if the trade continues.

The Great Trade Hypothesis is that most all of Western vitality was traded for one commodity, and a precious one at that, [Thermonuclear Peace]. And you have to honor these people. You have to give the devil its due. They did keep us out of thermonuclear war. Since November of 1952. The trade ended in January of 2025. You can decide that this is a good price to pay or a bad price to pay, but you cannot claim that the trade is continuing. We are back to vitality, and I'm sorry to say that almost certainly we will soon be back to kinetic war. The Great Nap is now over.
