Interoperability and Exclusion
Discussed with Sam Harris on The Portal Ep 11, "Interoperability and Exclusion" are the necessary counterparts to "Diversity and Inclusion".
There are certain die-hard actors, some of whom are quite polite and charming and funny, who just will notâlike, their thing is they will ride this to the most negative place if they can get there. And that sub-community I've been talking about in terms of, we have "diversity and inclusion", which I'm willing to say is a good thing, and then it needs a different function, which is "interoperability and exclusion", because there are certain people who can't be at the table for a conversation if it's going to progress.
-Eric Weinstein on The Portal Ep 11
A time to include, and a time to exclude.
A time for diversity and a time for commonality and interoperability.
A time for transparency to bring sunlight and a time for opacity.
A time for pluralism and a time for leadership.
A time for cancelation and a time for redemption.
A white car pulls up beside me at a light with his window rolled down. The driver is trying to tell me something. I reflexively open my window:
âDumb, dumb. Are you dumb?â
Taken aback, I say nothing. A metal object is hurled at me. The driver speeds off. It is a liquor flask.
I look at the liquor flask now in my car. I think: âHow should I have handled it differently?â
Never roll down your window? Donât drive? Move states? Size up drivers based on appearance?
Then I realized: this problem is isomorphic to this very issue I deal with on Twitter.
The world is losing it. You have a right to a measure of insulation.
I think having a metal booze flask thrown directly at my face by a raging fellow motorist is weirdly clarifying. Exclusion is as important as inclusion. I will be slower to roll down my window from now on. Sad.
