I am taking the privilege of determining the drinking songs of the community in my sole and dictatorial discretion.

No dissent will be tolerated, given the importance of this sacred task.

This is a solemn task.

We begin with Thomas Ravenscroft in 1609 from Deuteromelia.

I want videos dammit. And actual drinking.

This song represents our English contingent.

We have to learn actual songs. Small numbers of them.

We will visit France, India, Australia, Iran, Italy. Etc... but we begin with England.

project submissions from The Portal Community

We be soldiers three,
Pardonnez-moi je vous en prie,
Lately come forth from the low country,
With never a penny of money.

Here good fellow I drink to thee,
Pardonnez-moi je vous en prie,
To all good fellows where ever they be,
with never a penny of money.

We be soldiers three,
Pardonnez-moi je vous en prie,
Lately come forth from the low country,
With never a penny of money.

Here good fellow I'll sing you a song,
Sing for the brave and sing for the strong.
To all those living and those who have gone,
With never a penny of money.

We be soldiers three,
Pardonnez-moi je vous en prie,
Lately come forth from the low country,
With never a penny of money.

And he that will not pledge me this,
Pardonnez-moi je vous en prie,
pays for the shot what ever it is,
with never a penny of money.

We be soldiers three,
Pardonnez-moi je vous en prie,
Lately come forth from the low country,
With never a penny of money.

France: Tourdion[edit]

This song is typically played/sung with four-part harmony: soprano, alto, tenor, bass.

The soprano part carries the main lyrics, something like this:

(French)
Quand je bois du vin clairet
Ami tout tourne tourne tourne
Aussi désormais je bois Anjou ou Arbois
(2x)

Chantons et buvons
A ce flacon faisons la guerre
Chantons et buvons
Mes amis buvons donc.
(2x)

(English)
When I drink a Claret wine,
friends, my head turns, turns, turns
so from now on I'm drinking (wine from) Anjou or Arbois

let's sing and drink,
let's make war on this bottle
let's sing and drink,
my friends, drink up then.

An example of sheet music that includes lyrics for all four parts is here

Here's a YouTube playlist that includes a number of versions of this song.
