The purpose of modern immigration âjournalismâ is making the most common position appear as if no one holds it. That position is Xenophilic Restrictionism.
Wanting immigration decreased need have nothing to do w/ populism. Nothing to do w/ xenophobia. Nothing to do w/ jingoism.
Two different questions: Q1) Are you more of a xenophile or a xenophobe? Q2) Do you want immigration to your country expanded or restricted?
@CathyYoung63 True. I canât know for sure. But youâre missing my main point. I have been running versions of this question informally for almost 30 years. Based on results, Iâm eager to bait someone into making the objection you raise stick by running a professionally done large N poll. Do it!
@CathyYoung63 By all means, if you think *that* is the salient argument, then dare to ask my question. My main claim is that mass immigration advocates know that they are dependent on NOT asking my question. They depend on a universal narrative that restrictionism is due solely to xenophobia.
Iâd love to debate my friend @AndrewYang on the subject of so-called high-skill immigration.
Resolved: American STEM immigration was deliberately structured by the @NSF & @theNASciences via fake news to undermine the free market bargaining power of the US Scientist & Engineer.
I hope itâs clear that Iâm proposing this out of love for @AndrewYang and his mission. But I want to support his policies as well as the man I consider a friend. If heâs to stand a chance, he has to unlock the Xenophilic-Restrictionist mega block of voters that MSM denies exists.
Our US immigration problem is severe but it is not immigrants. Our problem is a despicable class of cynical fellow Americans hiding behind the immigrant who have weaponized our tolerance and used immigrants to transfer wealth from US labor to US capital. Itâs the wealth transfer.
My buddy @AndrewYang is welcome on The Portal. He is trying to become a portal out of our political theater.
If you want to accelerate that, make some noise. Iâve already asked and heâs said yes if I recall.
The phrase âUnprincipled Exceptionâ was introduced to me by a friend. It has explained to me something I could not understand on my own: why have so many formerly sane democrats gone loopy.
Late to the UE party. But the idea is that there are very different ways to be liberal.
One way is to look at the world as progressing, but subject to the constraints of what is possible.
The second way is to espouse a beautiful route to an impossible future and then grant oneself exceptions to living under the applications of those rule.
For example, âequality.â
One can say: âI want to live in an unequal world where that unevenness is modest and maximally reflective of contribution rather than race, color or creed.â
Or you can say âI believe in equality of outcome!â and then grant yourself an unprincipled exception from your Gulfstream.
Many anti-woke liberals and progressives never signed up for these big sweeping statements. I donât believe genes are irrelevant, inclusion is always positive, diversity is always more productive, borders should be open, etc. I have hypocrisy, but those are insane dumb ideas.
But I now better understand the confusions. If you think those big dumb ideas can be kept from destroying you by invoking unprincipled exceptions, you are being separated from first principles thinking at a deep level.
For example, if Iâm not anti-tribalist, that makes me âbadâ.
But anti-tribalism is the failed instantiation of a good idea. You donât have to be anti-tribalism to want to prevent genocides or communal violence. You can be for adaptive tribalism in a modern world. Xenophilic restrictionism is another example of this. A consistent position.
You donât have to say âBorders are wrong!â only to live a life impossible under open borders by having some carve-out.
Bottom line is that liberalism without undue reliance on unprincipled exceptions is possible, but a minority position. Hence the anti-woke left is rather small.
For reasons I cannot explain, it takes many less courage to live on unprincipled exceptions to suicidal beliefs than to take the hit up front (e.g. I personally am pro-tribal.) but then not have to live knowing your philosophy can be knocked over with a feather at any moment.
The punchline will be that a liberalism built unduly on unprincipled exceptions **must** descend into wholesale gaslighting at scale with the introduction of the Internet.
Itâs now too easy to challenge the exceptions. So fear must be induced. Cancellation for those who resist..
My fight is then recast: liberalism cannot live on this level of âunprincipled exception handlingâ or it will destroy itself in the age of the Internet. We must rebase on more realism or abandon it & admit it doesnât work.
I believe that liberalism CAN base itself on reality.
This distinguishes me from conservatives who see liberalism as sloganeering plus a hypocrisy of exceptions. But it would require courage to carry out what I am advocating.
More to come. But wanted to share this with anyone else wondering why they were fighting their own side.đ
If someone wants to fly me to the border Iâm happy to go. I may be highly xenophilic, but I am more restrictionist than both parties so it is likely unnecessary.
I donât believe in âlabor shortagesâ in market economies and I donât believe in âundocumented citizens.â
I believe in strong borders, deporting those who come illegally, and various ugly things that donât play well optically but are needed to have a diverse market based free society that can welcome the persecuted, family members, visitors/friends and the extraordinary individual.
My motto is something like: show me a person with a simple inspiring immigration message and Iâll show you the absolute misery it will create.
Show me a person with an ethical approach to immigration that actually works and Iâll show you optical ugliness that will be demonized.
I donât think either party wants to hear what Iâd have to say.
Immigration to America was the greatest thing that ever happened to my family. Everyone who wants to come should try. I WISH we could make that miracle happen for everyone.
We simply CANâT without losing our nation.
