The mistake, IMO, is in modeling immigration purely as a shift in labor supply (partial equilibrium). Since immigrants buy stuff locally, immigration also causes a rightward shift in labor *demand* (general equilibrium).

Yes, the key is that immigration causes labor demand, as well as labor supply, to shift to the right.

The new version of the Democratic Party, together with its supportive media and subservient universities are in the process of embittering and radicalizing *EVERY* single last US dissenter. I have watched the White House invite relatively random ‘influencers’ for briefings. But no one who actually has their own ideas. No one at all.

There is an old suite of ideas from a different time:

What appears to be coordinated is actually emergent.

What appears to be malice is actually incompetence.

What appears to be a pattern is generally random.

What appears to be doable outside of markets isn’t worth attempting because it can’t be coordinated and/or it is against human nature and/or has too many unintended consequences. ——

When enough people were educated to believe that suite as a sign of membership in the sophisticated elite, it then became possible to weaponize those ideas because they all shared a hidden feature: enervation.

People too sophisticated to believe in conspiracies, blame, patterns or the possibility of change will not only tend to do nothing, but they will tend to ensure that nothing can be coordinated around them except by narrow self interest. Which means markets/commerce/business is the only thing left.

But it is much more helpful to notice that if you have a portfolio of explanations and with allocations to emergence vs coordination, it would be insane to have a zero allocation to conspiracy.

Moral: Learn how to be a responsible conspiracy theorist. There are no lizard people. But there are sure a lot of back channels and algorithms you know nothing about.

A lot of Kamala supporting skeptics are asking me what I mean by “Donald Trump may not be allowed to become president again” in 2024

I think I am going to use this opportunity to show you why many sceptics, debunkers and educated people who reflexively and derisively target others as conspiracy theorists, are rapidly losing *everyone* smart and independent. Here goes:

I am suggesting that the 2024 election may be “Saved”. I am suggesting that our U.S. democracy may be “Fortified” between now and November. That right now there is a “conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes”. I am suggesting that Americans may be saved from “Russian electoral interference” by an “informal alliance” involving tech “business titans”.

I am suggesting that the possibility of “a vast, cross-partisan campaign” representing an “an extraordinary shadow effort” hidden, against all odds, from public view by complicict journalists who make sure not to write stories about it and editors who spike any remaining stories that mention it until after the election.

In short I am suggesting that there is right now a massive “conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes”. That “shadow campaigners” are secretly engaged in work that has “touched every aspect of the election” despite the lack of any stories from complicit mainstream news desks.

So what has all this to do with the army of insufferable character-assassins clothed as skeptics who laugh and laugh and laugh at conspiracy theorists?

Well, the conspirators confessed to the above after the 2020 election cycle. That is, it is those actually running cover for conspiracies that most aggressively label and smear those trying to piece together the shadow efforts as “conspiracy theorists”. Imagine a world so perverse where *correctly* labeling an actual conspirator is turned into an act of reputational self destruction even though the conspirators will later confess and brag about the whole thing while taking open victory laps.

Genius no? Diabolical genius, is still genius.

It that sounds far fetched, pathological, improbable, and diabolical to you, welcome to the club. It does to me too. But THAT *IS* WHAT HAPPENED exactly back in 2020.

A thought after talking with him: perhaps we all need to stop using the word “Intelligence” so much. Why? Because it is doing a lot of the work to cloak what we need to be worrying about: Covert Operations.

To remind ourselves, Covert Operations are operations with Gaslighting plans built into their structure in case they are exposed. They are the operations that can’t be exposed and have deniability built into their foundations even if that means destroying reporters, politicians, experts and civilians who get wind that something stinks.

Imagine you broke the Intelligence Community (IC) into two groups:

A) The actual intelligence community. B) The covert operations community.

My claim is that the lion’s share of the controversy about the IC is no longer about intelligence at all. It’s about covert operations.

It’s about killings, physically extracting information from prisoners, toppling governments, destroying reputations, training and arming paramilitaries, kompromat, running arms/drugs, propaganda, gaslighting etc.

Everytime we call this the Intelligence Community, we are doing the work of the Covert Operations Community (COC).

The IC isn’t without controversy. Listening in on secure communications, befriending humans to learn secrets, posing as people who do not exist, etc is also controversial.

But it is not remotely the same thing as sabotaging the brake lines on a family sedan, fixing elections or destroying the reputation of well meaning civilian experts whose expertise threatens to uncover their own government’s covert plots that they know nothing about.

Imagine there were a CIA and a COA (Covert Operations Agency) broken out and funded as *separate* entities. Perhaps 95% of the concern would be about the COA. Not the CIA. Which is why intelligence is in some sense acting as cover.

I do worry about the Intelligence Community. A little.

I worry about the Covert Operations operators every day. It’s in my news. It’s in my markets. It’s in every attempt to figure out what is actually going on in the world (e.g. Ukraine, physics, energy markets, elections). It is a large part of why we cannot think straight. An enormous structure that pretends to be not worth worrying about.

That is the source of propoganda, gaslighting, character assasination, torture, and murder. All protected by the idea that worrying about such actual people and actions can be taken as a sign of paranoia and mental illness! This is really incredibly sick. Also: genius. You have to give credit to these people. It’s an amazing thing to have people who question you, automatically self incinerate merely because they questioned what you were doing.

The problem isn’t intelligence. It’s covert operations. It’s the implicit COA, not the CIA.

And why is this? It’s because if there were a National Conspiracy Department in the form of a COC it would be a normal thing to ask about the nature of its work. Its budget. Its ethical restrictions. Its successes and failures. Etc. Even if you believe, as I do, that we unfortunately need such capacity in a dangerous world.

In its absence, only a paranoid conspiracy theorist would focus on such crazy things involving intelligence agencies. Who is against intelligence, after all? Certainly not me.

Genius. Pure genius.

No. No, i believe it doesn’t. And I have been railing against narrative driven journalism for years…with many people regarding it as if it were a suspicious conspiracy theory. Which it is not, as you can clearly see here,

Narrative driven news is where the arc is worked out in advance by the editors before the facts are fully known and the facts are then slotted into the arc to drive the story.

As I see it, there is a stark difference between what news is, and what storytelling is.

Imagine your nation is losing a war. Is it the job of the press to tell you the facts? Or is the job of the press to tell you that you are winning, *despite* the truth, so as to keep up morale witb a positive narrative? It can’t do both.

I don’t think I am misrepresenting Ms. Clinton here. She believes that the press should be narrative driven where the narratives guide us to the better path as she sees it. I, in contrast, believe the *first* duty is to be fact and event driven without narrative. This is simply a **stark** difference of opinion about what the press is supposed to be.

What its job is. As it were.

The first branch of the decision tree: does Donald Trump keep his word? Will this be a good faith effort to end the mysteries around Nov 22, 1963? My bet is that Trump does and that this does not look anything like the insane and botched release of meaningless white binders on Epstein to MAGA influencers. If I am wrong, this will result in widespread mistrust of Trump by MAGA, and MAGA will likely start to declare independence from Trump. I don't think this will happen so I am not going to say more on this. I'll just have guessed wrong.

Next Branch: Assuming this is the full reveal, do we learn that this was simply Lee Harvey Oswald acting alone? I don't believe it is. But if it is, the next branch will be "Did the US try to control the narrative with extraordinary measures beyond those that should have been allowed?" I believe that the answer will be yes to this independent of. This results in widespread distrust of all previous governments.

Popping back up, if it was not LHO as lone gunman, all hell breaks loose with public trust FAR beyond where we even are Post-Covid. The concept of 'Conspiracy Theorist' dies. The concept of 'No one can keep a secret.' dies. People learn at scale that there is an *ENORMOUS* difference between correctly guessing that the government lied, and having the USG confirm that every government official kept the lie at official levels.

As to possible culprits:

It is going to be a big deal. People have speculated about everything under the sun. Those who got it most right will be held up properly. Everyone who didn't believe the Warren Report was the end of it will feel vindicated. Personally, I am eager to hear how close Danny Shehan was.

As an American, I worry it doesn't get tied back to the USG because that will lead to an American unraveling of trust in everything. But I take the same attitude I have taken to Epstein which also needs to be released.

The number of people involved in such plots are tiny. And tiny numbers of CIA/Mafiosi/Mossad/Party Leaders do not represent the group. If it turns out it was CIA sponsored, it will not be a large group of people who kept this going. It will be a tiny number of people.

[For those of you who follow my push to tie Epstein to the IC, this should sound very familiar: if it turns out that Epstein was CIA and/or Mossad (which I view to be most likely), I will want to know that we have a problem with psychopaths in those organizations. I will call for deep hearings like Church/Pike in the 1970s. I have called this problem of small groups acting on behalf of a nation "Jessupization" after Col Nathan Jessup in "A Few Good Men". Eventually, Jessup misplays his hand and Lt. Calley isolates the cancer.]

When it comes to the US, at some point you have to cut out the cancer of rogues who claim to act on behalf of us all. And the best day is always 'today'.

A very interesting question is why academics almost uniformly make fun of conspiracy theories…when presented by colleagues at least.

Los Alamos, Tuskegee, Human Terrain Systems, etc. all involved conspiracy BY ACADEMICS. Some were good. Some bad. Some ambiguous.

But isn’t it odd that conspiracies are a permanent part of human existence, yet trying to study them or theorize about them results in crippling professional penalties?

I am astonished that I have not heard one single physicist call @pmarca a liar for claiming the Biden Whitehouse revealed that entire public subfields of theoretical physics were taken off-line by the government for security reasons, and disappeared or went dark.

Nor have I heard “We have to look into this!”. Nor have I heard “Wow! That is super interesting.” Just silence.

But what I have heard is academics finding it laughable that others find this is interesting.

The @pmarca claim about physics is thus one of the most anti-interesting claims I have ever heard. Everyone in physics just seems to intuitively know not to ask about it.

Has anyone seen @michiokaku, @neiltyson, @bgreene etc. commenting on this claim? I haven’t.

They all just know: Don’t go there girlfriend.

Here is a challenge for any of my colleagues who think this is a nothingburger: given the craziness of the widely discussed and publicized claims in a field that has not seen a change in the Fundamental models of physics in 50 years (!), who are the 25 most prominent physicists and mathematicians who have discussed the @pmarca claims publicly? Nobel laureates? Fields medalists? Chaired professors worried about the health of science? Top science communicators? PhD level debunkers demanding @pmarca to put up or shut up?

In a functional world where scientists are not precarious, it would be a *huge* topic of interest, discussion and academic freedom. Or it would be debunked. That’s it. There are no other options. Just those two.

Michael Shermer: you are quite incautious about what I say. Your world is dominated by careful scientists and wild eyed conspiracy theorists. The idea of wild eyed scientists (e.g. Francis Collins, Gerald Bull, Peter Daszak, Edward Teller) and careful conspiracy theorists (e.g. Seymour Hersh, William Davidon, Jack Raper, Gary Webb, etc) doesn’t occur to you nearly enough.

Is that deliberate? It sure as hell would be a lot less suspicious if we ever had the string theorist/quantum gravity people at the same conference head to head with their rivals and detractors. Wouldn’t it?

I’m sorry this seems crazy to you. But the U.S. government makes shit up. It’s called “Covert Operations”. In laymen’s terms: we conspire to gaslight our own people. And we do it a lot around national security.

Perhaps I assign this higher probability because I know at least three things @grok, that most people don’t (or didn’t).

A) The Low Dimensional Topology Revolution, underneath it all is really about gauged gravity. Chern Simons, SDYM, Atiyah Bott….all of it was closer to gravity, but portrayed as Yang Mills. I discussed this point exactly with Jim.

B) Isadore Singer was a very tough guy who was often as hard as nails, and had no grade inflation in his praise. He tried to get me to go to RenTec. I admit that the absence or scarcity of hard NHI / UFO evidence is a powerful clue to this mystery.

You admit that there are secret programs and that they are not indications of conspiracy madness.

Have I been invited to address the national Academy on this? Again yes. Four or five times. Did i co-found a program to study and defend what was being done to American Scientists? Again yes. At Harvard and NBER. Funded my Sloan.

And check my history. I’ve been 100% consistent on this for four decades.

But I am not on your teams. And the teams are too ignorant, weak, tribal and petty to restore American Science.

The greatness of American science was RADICAL individualism and freedom. Freedom from teams.

Give us our money back. Fire our administrators. Give us back our seats at the table. Drive DEI and fairness out of the labs. Stop lying about foreign labor as the best and the brightest. And learn to listen to DISCORDANT VOICES OF *INDIVIDUALS* AGAIN.

As yourself: who are the leading American cowboy scientists advising the Oval Office or at Mar-a-Lago? Tech does not represent science!!

If I were Trump, I would be sitting down with individual American scientists with ideas rather ithan checking if they were wearing a MAGA hat or belonged to some team. You can’t make American science great again by restricting to loyalists.

It’s like this. Science needs autonomy.

This isn’t a science problem. Its a subordination problem curable by autonomy.

All our colleagues who stayed in the system self-censor. All those who don’t leave the system.

No one has figured out how to stay in the system w/ freedom.

You and I failed by leaving. Others failed by staying. This has nothing to do with “us”. It’s not a personal failure issue. It’s a 55 year attack on scientific autonomy. You simply failed a Hobson’s choice problem. As did I. As did the people who went along with the madness.

And I am not going to make this personal. No one stayed in the system as a loud beacon of scientific freedom. Not one voice.

This is tough when conspiracies are unquestionably a ubiquitous part of normal life, but do not come close to determining or explaining everything that happens around us.

We have entire agencies tasked with conspiring and creating conspiracies. We have RICO law that targets them. Every trade group is one. We convene Blue Ribbon Panels to conspire to sanitize disasters. We designate legal containers to hold them called USAPS. We used to hold hearings on the ones we did ourselves to ourselves. We make documentaries about them. We confess to them. They are a way of life.

The Biden Dementia operation was a conspiracy.
