Streisand Squeeze

The "Streisand Squeeze" is a strategic tactic conceptualized by Eric Weinstein, introduced in a Twitter thread on April 28, 2021. This concept builds on the "Streisand Effect"—a term derived from an incident involving Barbra Streisand, where efforts to suppress information inadvertently led to its wider dissemination.

Unlike the unintentional effect, the Streisand Squeeze involves deliberately engaging and harassing public individuals to provoke a response, thereby manipulating their audience to focus on a specific issue or narrative. This method incorporates elements of media manipulation, signal boosting, social engineering, and stalking, and involves initiating actions or comments that lead the targeted person to engage with them, thus drawing their audience’s attention to the initiator’s cause or message. This might involve controversy, misleading statements, or other forms of engagement that do not require the initiator to be straightforward or honest.

The Streisand Squeeze is an unethical strategy designed to manipulate, exploit, and erode public discourse and personal reputations. The desired outcome is twofold: increased visibility for the initiator's message or product, and potential discrediting or manipulation of the target's responses in ways that benefit the initiator.

I called this the Streisand Squeeze in a slightly different context. So the idea is that a low value human becomes obsessed with you because what they get out of it, is if you react to them, they want the attention and the portion of your audience that dislikes you to become their audience. And if you answer the criticism. like, intellectually, you're fundamentally playing into a gambit. So you try not answering the criticism, and then it becomes, why won't he answer his critics? And then you're saying, well, are you applying this criticism uniformly? Are you—? It's an absolutely diabolical situation.

We need fights, we need critics, we need debates that are refereed, that are ethical, where people shake hands at the beginning and hug at the end, touch gloves, you know. We don't have that! And we're dying from that. You'll notice that, for example, in the String Theory and the String Theory critics, they basically don't appear on the same stage ever. And this has to do with Wrestling versus MMA. You notice that you don't see—if wrestling is so effective, why don't we try it, like, professional wrestling inside of an MMA thing where you're jumping up on the cage and coming down and all this stuff, it's because one thing is an actual sport and one thing is a simulated sport. And I think that what we need is we need Queensberry Rules. Queensberry rules is how you avoid kayfabe, you have ideas, you can't gouge eyes. You can't use small digit manipulation where you break fingers. You can't go for the throat or the genitals. You put your finger on—I've never heard of this “Criticism Capture”, and I love it.

And that's why I developed the concept of the Streisand Squeeze. Either you allow us to whittle away at you, or you respond to us, you boost us, and you become part of the trap. You know, if you ever watch, like David Attenborough, naturalism, you'll see pack animals, whether it's orcas or hyenas, it doesn't matter. They do this thing where they nip at their target. And then there's this weird voiceover, which I don't understand at all. It says, you know, the hyenas are trying to trick the animal into expending its energy, to fend off these nips. The nips don't actually do much damage, but they do exhaust the animal, so it won't be able to fight later. So. Okay, so imagine that you don't respond to the nips. Do you live? No, no, no, no, you—then the hyenas become emboldened, and then you die a different way! So my point is, is that evolution would certainly have figured out not to respond to the nips if that was a winning strategy.

The Streisand Squeeze: naming a new exploit.

Many of you have heard of “The Streisand Effect” but may not know it has evolved into a tactic. Certainly I didn’t grasp this until recently, and I couldn’t find a description or name for it. Hence this thread. https://t.co/kYhhEQZdTi

Here is the basic idea. You have something like a podcast, community or product you want to promote. Only maybe it’s tough to find an audience. So the exploit is that you are going use people who have built audiences to drive their traffic to you relying on digital harassment.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

For example, let’s imagine Sally Gupta has built a brand and following and you want a chunk of it for your dental products website https://t.co/wUEN91Kct6

So you start harassing her (and other people w/ audiences) getting followers focused on her teeth. It’s free speech, right?

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

Maybe Sally has a chipped tooth. Or maybe she has her own dental care line and you raise generic questions you know aren’t adding much of anything.

“What unsafe ingredients might Sally be hiding from customers of her toothpaste empire?”

If she doesn’t respond? Sally’s hiding!

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

The goal is to get Sally Gupta to react to drive traffic. So you try to needle Sally. But perhaps Sally has been coached not to react to avoid triggering the Streisand Effect. So what do you do?

Here is where the squeeze comes in. You feed others in Sally’s orbit or ecosystem.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

Once you map out who Sally knows you target people who are unsuspecting. Maybe you pose as a friend of Sally. Or maybe you look for someone in a conflict with her. Or you feed something pre-chewed to a blog or news cite.

If you succeed, you have locked Sally in a drama with you.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

But Sally may not even know who you are. She didn’t consent to be your friend. She didn’t do business w/ you. You forced her to contend w/ you despite no meaningful earlier connection. And now she has to swat you away by responding...which is your big win. She mentions the drama.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

Boom, now you are on her level. You have succeeded in getting into a dispute with someone with an audience even if Sally says “This NewToothpaste company is relentlessly harassing me!” Ha! She mentioned you!!

That’s the Streisand Squeeze. Dramas one can’t respond to *or* ignore.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

Many of you have wanted to know why I’ve yet to restart the podcast. Well, right now I am targeted in more than one Streisand Squeeze plays. And, to be honest, I don’t know what to do. I get the advice you can’t respond. And I get the advice you can’t ignore. But I can’t do both.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

So one thing I may try to explain in a bit is that when I don’t respond to something, you may not be seeing the same iceberg I am. You may be seeing the tip.

In particular, the main tactic is to create fear & doubt: “This podcast/person is running dangerous irresponsible cult.”

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

Many of you are away that @uberfeminist, @piney_the, @Sciencing_Bi were all trying to protect you from abusive scientists.

Only one problem: They were all fake harassing accounts pretending to promote health in the sciences or to tell you the truth. I was targeted w drama by 2.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

Well, now I am being targeted by different groups. In one case a modest collection of PhDs (I kid you not) who enjoy talking and laughing about doxing me, targeting my home, my family and about violently raping. I have been sent a large amount of evidence that is chilling.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

I’d like to avoid posting what I have. But groups attempt to force me to mention them & respond to them by harassment to drive traffic to their sites. I don’t know a soul who knows how to handle an “Academe meets 4chan” community alternating between science & Rape/Doxx threats.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

So, here’s where we are. I’d like to podcast more. Rest assured we have a considerable amount of material scraped from the harassers’ sites. We also now have real names in most, but not yet all, cases. But we would like to avoid getting into moronic drama.

Not sure what to do.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

If you have been through this with your following, I would value talking through legal, security, and social media strategies. If this is happening to me with different groups, I am guessing others have it worse with their followings. But The Streisand Squeeze is no joke.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

I just hope you never encounter it. It sickens me and sours me because there isn’t a great solution to a double bind.

I want to get back to bringing you things I’m excited about that are hopeful, new and may be a portal out of our current world of social media!

Thx for reading.

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

Lastly if you see me not responding to something, consider the above. Use your noodle and it will make sense.

I’ll say more when and if I have this figured out a bit better. But we are really counseled to say *nothing* by the top people in security. Sucks man! But so it is.

🙏

9:54 PM · Apr 28, 2021

P.S. if someone asks you why we aren’t releasing episodes or responding to some issues, send them here. This is one of the main reasons post election. We would like to be back up at full throttle and hope to be so soon.

[Not sure how many will see this these days on Twitter.]
