Moral: you can't just fire people and break things with a government and a nuclear superpower with many non-market functions the way in which you can with a for-profit company you just bought. You can somewhat. But there are limits to the analogy. 

I like the idea of cleaning house. I like the idea of moving fast. I even like the idea of doing *severe* violence to the cancer in our system. Maybe even too much. 

But at some point you realize you can't just sew back everything you just hacked to pieces. Not everything is reversable with money. 

Word to the wise: Real science is easy to destory and very hard to rebuild when you are trying to destroy TheScience™.

A) Research Universities are supposed to be dedicated to scholarship and discovery above all else. Not teaching. Not politics. Not incubating business spinoffs.

B) They are suppose to be exclusive. Not inclusive.

C) The professors are supposed to lead the university. Not the staff. Not the administrators. 

D) Academics are not to be made precarious. 

E) Even private elite universities are not really private. They are government funded to do the work that the market cannot.

F) The USG is in breach of the historical commitment to support blue sky science in US Universities.

G) Graduate students are workers disguised as students. Foreign students are a foreign workforce. 

H) Peer review is astonishingly recent and doesn’t work. 

I) There is a quasi military function to research universities. They are part of National Security. Patriotism matters.

J) Some fields do not deserve to be together on a level field. Biology and gender studies for example. 

K) Some fields *may* now be too dangerous to be studied openly.  Parts of physics, number theory and 
Machine learning leap to mind. This must be studied. 

L) The AAU, NSF, NAS etc. have all conspired against the welfare of American scientists and their families. Scientists need to be in the rooms where their fates are determined. 

M) The difference between a research university and a college takes place almost exclusively within three groups of people: Professors, Graduate Students, and PostDocs/Researchers/Visitors. It often takes place in the afternoons. In seminars. In Labs. Etc. If you aren’t part of that world you aren’t part of the University. You are working or studying in BigEd but not involved with the university itself.

N) The great man/woman theory is basically correct in academics. Individual academicians change the world. 

O) The Mansfield amendment, Dole-Bayh, Eilberg, IMMACT90 etc laws need to be undone. The damage has been incalculable.

|content=Science is technically a "public good" which means it has twin characteristics that make markets unable to price it.

You can use the Pythagorean Theorem an arbitrary number of times with out 'wearing it out' (i.e. it is inexhaustible). And no one can stop the next person from learning it once it is known (i.e. it is inexcludible).

Anything that is both inexhaustible and inexcludable  *cannot* command a price that equals its value.  Thus it becomes a market failure...i.e. even a knowledgable free market zealot knows that it has to be supported off market.

We don't even let scientists profit from intellectual property rights to their discoveries. We PROHIBIT IT.

To decide that the private sector should sort out science  is actually a repudiation of competent free market economics which is very clear about such market failures of price to equal value. Science has a high value and a nearly zero price. Hence we support it historically at a high level. 

Thus I must respectfully must disagree with my old friend John here. Which is an infrequent occurance.

Moral: The private sector isn't magic. You can't just give the private sector final say on whatever is valuable. You can do that only if the thing in question is in the category of standard goods and services. But it doesn't work for an entire category of well known market failures. Like basic research in science.

I believe @realDonaldTrump, @JDVance and @elonmusk are all very smart. Are we that unbelievably angry at non-scientist Tony Fauci that we are up for destroying ourselves? Maybe! But I say bullshit. No one smart is that dumb.

Trump and I both went to Univ. of @Penn and he even graduated with a degree from Wharton. Whether you love him or hate him, I don't think of Wharton graduates as being so ignorant of economics or markets that they think markets have no failures. I think he gets markets.

The idea that markets work for everything is an insane  simplistic position which is popular only on the internet. 

It has zero support among smart pro-market economists. Left, Right, Independent or Center.

|content=I love this place. You see it in everything I talk about. 

It is 100 percent serious. I don’t want to go to Mars. I want our descendents to survive.

So far as I understand it, @elonmusk is motivated by Mars because he doesn’t see physics as viable. So Mars motivates an engineer. It can be attacked today without a change in Einsteinian physics or cracking the Standard Model. He must find physics enervating as it hasn’t moved.

I have the inverted reaction. Everyday I think about physics because I think it is doable. In fact, I think we will occupy Mars from Post Einsteinian physics before we get their with chemical rockets. I cannot explain why we have come to opposite conclusions. 

I wish we were holding debates and conferences about what we can do to beat the clock as we have billions of eggs in one basket. But it isn’t sci fi. I just spoke about the Dark Energy in a physics department. 

We are going to attack this one way or the other. And we need more people daring to take this seriously in public. 

Our top priority on earth is as clear to me as can be: we must do everything in technical fields to restore our indefinite human future that was lost in November of 1952.

I honestly don’t know how anyone comes to a different conclusion. And if @elonmusk and I ever debate it out, I will move to his project if he can convince me chemical rockets are the way to go. I would like to think he would do the same if he became convinced that a change in our laws of physics is likely to work first.

It’s not about ego. It’s not about science fiction. It is nakedly about one thing: loving humanity and the quest to restore an indefinite future. And traverse the cosmos.

If no one laughed when you said that, wouldn’t you agree that this is the most marvelous use of a life? I think you would.

Then ignore the laughter. Think about it. I trust you will come to the same conclusion.

Read carefully, it's target is American STEM employers who lie as a way of life about the quality of our own STEM people in order to gain access to foreign labor. 

My contention is that we destroy American STEM which is the best in the world because it is expensive, irreverant and high risk/high return. 

If you want to go shopping abroad for future americans who are expensive, irreverant and high risk/high return, let me know and I will design your labor market. 

But I will never put up with Americans who misportray just how good U.S. STEM really is in order gain access to oceans of plient low variance high value labor.

If you actually believe that expertise has collapsed, then explain why the power class are right now buying,  converting, and privatizing your experts, while all the while whispering in your ear that the public spirited experts still loyal to their craft are charlatans, madmen, “big mad”, grifters, pseudo scientists and anything else they think you might be dumb enough to believe?

Have you never heard of concierge medicine? Who flies and maintains the planes at the private airports? Who does the plastic surgery? What do former Delta force operators do for work when they need to make money? Who provides IT security in $50M mansions? Who builds those homes?

Don’t be an idiot. The more you are taught to hate and distrust your experts, the more they will turn to power to provide their expertise privately and bullshit to you publicly. 

Sorry. But that is exactly what is happening.

|content=I find myself in agreement with @realchrisrufo on this point.

I'll fill a bit in as well that doesn't seem to be well known.

Our private research universities are not actually purely private. They are designed to be both a cryptic soft extension of the state (e.g. national security, priming the prosperity pipeline with blue sky research, truth adjudication, etc.), which is also oppositely intended as an independent check on the state and state power in times of abuse as well. This tacit and quiet knowledge, which used to be held at the AAU and the relevant professors, has been mostly lost.

So 'overhead' or 'indirect costs' is not actually overhead at all. It is supposed to be cryptic state support based on research merit to avoid political pressure to fund 3rd tier universities at the same level as Princeton. So the whole system was designed back in the Vannevar Bush era but without leaving the esoteric knowledge with modern academicians. 

It's a disaster. It was a quiet game which worked brilliantly to serve the nation and its population until lunatics started to get a foothold in the research universities.

This is why when you audit this stuff, you see waste. It wasn't ever intended to be what it appears to be: this was the USG paying to have a totally ELITE and EXCLUSIVE quasi-private, quasi-public resource. Think Manhattan project. Think The Jasons. Think winning.

And, despite my deep dislike of how @realchrisrufo has acted towards me, his point is spot on. If the elite U.S. universities are so confused as to think that they are truly 100% private and that they should be allowed to destroy their role of ELITE service to the nation which built them up with federal dollars, that is a moment to remind them of the "Endless Frontier" agreement. 

First the USG welched on the agreement with the Mansfield Ammendment and Dole Bayh and then IMMACT90. Then the universities welched with DEI. 

BOTH parties need to get back to the quiet agreement, or the whole thing will just fall apart. And the US research achipeligo is a *MAJOR* part of american greatness which we seem to be about to destroy because we can't figure out how to do this.

[And for those of you who seem to believe that quiet and tacit agreements are always bad, so that the Manhattan Project should have been academic and totally open because 'Sunlight is always the best disinfectant!!', I highly encourage you to use the comment section to complain again about elitism, gatekeeping, Fauci, experts, science, government and credentials. I get it. You can't stop to listen...or think. I totally get you. Looking forward to your vitriol. I agree with you. He *could* make a strong statement to admit defeat. There are clear reasons not to do this from the ST perspective. It is thus unlikely. 

My point was that he could do something *vastly* less expensive. And the fact that Susskind, Witten, Greene, etc won’t do even that tells us that this isn’t about string theory. It’s about no other theories or theorist being worth considering. It’s abuse of the referee role.

Somehow, the String Theorists set themselves up as a football team that is also the *sole* source of game referees.

So even when their team loses on the field,  they still win by referees decision that they are the only real team competing. Everyone else focuses on whether they have background independence, particle predictions or a renormalizable spin 2 quantization. That is a total red herring. 

Sabine: Theoretical physics isn’t this dumb or anti-scientific. It’s impossible. “The only game in town” campaign is not a string theoretic idea. It is totally foreign to science.

Something separate doesn’t want rival theories side by side. In a science we would all be expected to listen to each other. This is what my first memories of physics looked like 1983-1988. There were different ideas. Nothing like this.

The defining feature of String Theory is that it would rather fundamental physics die than that String Theory face healthy adult rivals that were not maimed, crippled, stolen, or murdered in their cribs.

|content=The IDW was not ever what it was assumed to be. I just didn’t want to define it.

It was supposed to be a model of the CULTURE that meant that we could have free speech, free markets and one man one vote democracy as our ideals. 

All of which I still believe to this day. I love the U.S. culture we were building before our current madness.  

As I have said from the beginning, I fear that I don’t share the beliefs of my crowd. 

I do not simply believe in a pure free markets because I have studied market failure. I do not believe in free speech absolutism in a world with pedophiles, nuclear proliferation and Weaponized Anthrax. I do not believe in a democratic absolutism because madmen have ascended through crowds. 

Yet I continue to believe in giving public voice and FREE SPEECH to the *dangerous* and *wicked* alike. In relying on imperfect free markets wherever possible, and in trying to use the ballot box to avoid Armageddon.

The magic of the United States wasn’t the parchment. It wasn’t the rules. It wasn’t anything like that. 

It was the culture. Our shared culture. 

We agreed, for the most part, not to elect utopians. We agreed to a measure of pro-social hypocrisy (e.g. “free speech” with speech restrictions, prohibiting violent jihad despite a 1st amendment protection for all religions, moderately regulated free markets).  We agreed on underdogs. Etc. 

So while everyone one else is trying to sell you on free speech or expertise or journalistic standards or the scientific method or whatever….I’ll sit over here and try to wait it out. 

The secret of what made America great, as I see it, had a lot to do with culture and taste. It had to do with being smart, mildly hypocritical, religious without being doctrinaire, open without being wildly open, welcoming without being a doormat, progressive without being psychotic, conservative without being reactionary, modest in interventionism without being isolationist. 

And I continue to stand for the right of free speech and tell anyone who will listen: free speech is essential….but it is the easy part. The tough part is having a *culture* that doesn’t abuse it to the point of organizing mass delusions, mobs, narrative warfare, lynchings and pogroms. 

*FIT* dangerous ideas exist everywhere and drive out less fit better ideas on podcasts. Thus we need a culture that curtails and retards the reach of terrible ideas (e.g. Transgender evangelism) by putting *immense* pressure on the most dangerous of fit ideas. But I still want to hear them. And I want you to hear them too. So I keep fighting what I take to be the most attractive terrible ideas I can find. I don’t know what else to do honestly. 

The IDW wasn’t about the rules of free speech. Those are easy and straightforward. It was instead about the culture of free speech. The taste, if you will, needed to make the magic work. 

American values are not for pussies. Its a ton of responsibility and risk that almost no one wants. 

But It’s our culture, and not a protocol or laws, that made the magic. And I’d like to get back to that as soon as possible.

You see, I don’t know what Covid is. Is it a science project? A miraculous spontaneous mutation? A bioweapon leak?

But what I do know was that there was TREMENDOUS pressure to say something false about the Wuhan Labs. 

Likewise here: I don’t know what happened in Dallas. What I feel confidence in is that we have been lying about telling all we know about what happened in Dallas. 

Same with UFOs. What do I know? Very little. But what little I do know is that too many grownups in Govt are talking about something real. That real thing could be a fake program. Or cover for physics research. Or many things.

But the debunking thing has a different energy. I appreciate all you do to explain videos and sightings that have genuinely prosaic explanations. Truly. 

What I don’t believe at all is that there is no use of UFO SAPs by the USG. I think we create SAPs and we ruin people’s lives around them when good folks can’t let go of the fact that they saw or experienced or interacted with something we know a lot about. 

That’s my issue. Discrediting behavior targeted on individuals to protect programs with claims of national interest.

Our government is likely by far the most major actor in the science bunko story. And I want bunk out of science. Starting with Nature, Princeton, the Lancet, Harvard, NSF, and Communications in Mathematical Physics.

So that is where we differ. What you are looking at with junky video analysis is helpful. But in my opinion it is the “minor (albeit very interesting) issue”. The major issue is government control of and subordination of science to NatSec disinformation and misinformation. Like COVID.

So we found the source of our issue. I take @pmarca very seriously on this. I want top scientists in the room who can restrain those NatSec people who can’t keep a virus confined to a secure laboratory meant to circumvent our participation in the bioweapns agreements. I want physicists in the room who say “Wait: why are we doing the same thing for decades that clearly doesn’t work while not pursuing other paths?” I want economists saying “But that would be faking a lower inflation number to raise taxes and slash benefits in a way that the public couldn’t grasp.”

And you are more worried about ghost stories spreading unimpeded because people see ordinary things that are just kinda misinterpreted. That’s noble. But I don’t intuit why that is the major issue.

The Military lost control of a FAKE UFO special access program. What were you thinking? 

The Whitehouse installed a committee to replace a Parkinson’s president. And you want neuroscientists to lie on behalf of an unelected committee?

You wasted 40 years of physicist putting an end to the career of anyone who wouldn’t believe in Ed Witten as the quantum gravity fairy. And that makes the people who called it into crackpots?? Walk us through the logic.

You blew up the world financial system on a story called “The Great Moderation”. And this makes those of us who called it into charlatans? How exactly? Be specific. 

We can’t afford to kill all our strongest minds, all the time on EVERY botched operation.

B) Game Two: We have an Esoteric/Exoteric tradition. We *sometimes* acknowledge in seminars problems in our fields that we absolutely do NOT share with the public. Example: “Sure NAFTA is going to hurt a *LOT* of people but it is still net good, so we close our eyes and pretend to the public that it will help everyone by appealing to a hypothetical  Kaldor-Hicks redistribution that we all know will never ever happen.”

You can hate that all you want. But the populists at the gate have had enough. They are angry for a GOOD reason. But they don’t believe in expertise like we do.

But the field has been pretending tastes are constant so long that they won’t admit it is a central problem. 

This means a lot to me. Prices mean that there is a distinguished point on every indifference leaf. 

What arrow missed was the following. 

His claim was that his impossibility theorem was dual to this problem. 

A) Arrow Thm: Many conflicting agents at one instant of time. 

B) One conflicting agent evolving over many instants of time. 

So he claimed it couldnt be right. But he missed that it is not dual!!

Why? 

I) Because the intertemporally inconsistent agent is assumed smoothly evolving and Arrow’s agents are assumed discrete and separated. So that is different. 

II) Voting is not a market. Markets have marginal tradeoff mechanisms that elections do not. 

Thus Arrow made a partial duality. Which was clever! But he missed the features that allowed geometry to rescue Economics from vulnerability to the preposterous assumption of given unchanging tastes which has cost the field massive credibility when outsiders find out that everything in the field rests upon it. 

So: Help me spread the word that this is huge? Summarize what happened here. And thanks again for all the cycles and tokens!

Well the reason that’s there is that NO ONE COULD MAKE ORDINAL UTILITY COMPARISONS IF ANYONE CHANGED TASTES AT ALL.

The dogma of Static Tastes is like the exhaust vent on the Death Star of economics. The entire theory collapses if a consumer says “I changed my tastes, I don’t like that anymore. I like this” and the field went into overdrive to make excuses. Many luminaries have quietly written about this. 

But there is an oddity. In the theory of CARDINAL utility we don’t have this problem. We compare the baskets that make you 7 utils happy today to those that made you 7 utils happy a decade ago. Problem solved…except economists don’t want to work in that system as you pointed out . They only use it for risk under von Neumann Morganstern Sub utility. The whole thing is incredibly sketchy hiding the vulnerability.

|content=I think we are all losing our minds. 

Let me float an idea I haven’t heard.

What made us a poweful wealthy and largely decent society was a kind of tasteful hypocrisy if you will. 

We had regulated markets and trade which we called “Free Markets”. We had somewhat public spirited cronyism which we called “Capitalism”. We had a party-managed republic we called a “Democracy”. We had a Senate while somehow proclaiming “One man, One Vote”. We had a million restrictions on what could be said frictionlessly at scale and who has that privilege, and yet we openly claimed we had “Free Speech”. 

It’s all sort of mind blowing. It never made complete sense. At least to me.

At it’s absolute best, our whole thing was a tasteful managed hypocrisy.

And that hypocrisy creaked along and worked for us. But it doesn’t play well on the internet. 

So now we are trying to go back to an imagined consistent system to resolve that hypocrisy. Which can’t be done. I wish that weren’t true…but I’m afraid it is.

If no one else will say it, I will. I think the crazy compromises and checks and balances at least need to be revisited. They were always somewhat comically hypocritical. Granted. But the new search for ideological purity may doom us even more quickly.

Literally this is going through my mind. They don’t even exist and I have been trained to HATE them….and I just created them. I’m running malware to keep to keep me from questioning.

They are us without importing workers.
They are us when we need an army.
They are us w/o geriatric pregnancy.

And we treat our own solution like greedy, spoiled, delusional undermotivated leeches.

We have not noticed that we have been trained to hate the solution.

Helping Mike and Chloe capture the value in Mike’s toil and Chloe’s focus on raising our next generation actually feels like Communism to us. This is bananas.

In fact, getting them a future with vacations and retirement is the exact thing that  will stop Communism and Revolutionaries from whispering in our children’s ears.

Quite honestly, I don’t believe Mike has been capturing his value in our markets. My generation worked harder and smarter than our parent’s generation so I have something of a comparison. This is my core disagreement with the GOP.

My solution? 

1) Analyse Mike’s value creation and value capture along with early life debt burden. Which is considerable. 

2) Impute value for Chloe’s non market value proposition. Which is ENORMOUS.

3) Impute value capture estimates. I believe there is a value siphoning issue. Mike and Chloe need to capture more of their value. And this is going to cause all hell to break loose. This is what we fear discussing. 

4) Get rid of UBI. Implement Coasian Rights for the coming AI reorganization. 

5) End the war on Mike and Chloe. They arent leeches. They are the solution. 

Bad ideas beat no ideas. But tangible market ideas with homes/futures/retirements can beat bad ideas.

We dont have to lose to Revolutionaries. 

That is…unless we want to.

They…We…are statists because we produce a public good. Our job was supposed to be to give up normal careers to produce something of sky high value but near zero price. A market failure in economics parlance. So you MUST create a market for it. The maket can’t price a small number of things. Science is at the top of that list. Like the Manhattan Project. We can’t generally sell what we do even if it is of immense value and absolutely best in the world. 

You want them not to be statists: its trivially easy. Just invite them to participate in the very America they already built. Scientists built this technologically advanced free market economy by producing the seed public good. 

Now we economically rape them. 

Why? It’s pathological.

Our agreement was that we were supposed to participate in US strength and prosperity. We got hammered 55 years ago with the Mansfield Amendment.

That is: We produced the Radon Transform. Years later someone else captured the value and produced Tomography machines based on the Radon Transform. 

We are not supposed to sit around like idiot beggars in the mean time pleading for a hot meal, a tiny grant, and a warm place to sleep. It’s fucking insane. 

We are basically asking China to rape the US scientifcally right now. I do not understand what we are doing and I am fairly well informed across academic biology, mathematics, physics, economics, etc. It’s like we are throwing the game deliberately because we are afraid some Number Theorist is going to end up with a Sports Car, three kids, a retirement and a second home. And none of our tech friends understand this. Nor Sergey. Not Sam. Not Elon. Not Peter. Not Marc. Etc. All brilliant. All blind to this one particular issue. Science is a separate beast. 

I’m at a total…*TOTAL*…loss. And we will lose to China if we don’t fix this.
