The Formula for Innovation (And How to Escape Your Own Restrictions) is an episode of The James Altucher Show with guest Eric Weinstein. This episode is the first part of the interview continued in the next episode.
Description
âI didnât think I was going to finish college,â Eric Weinstein said. He has a PhD in mathematical physics.
From Harvard.
âIâm an imposter,â he said.
âWhat do you mean?â
âI didnât have a thesis advisor.â
Meaning, he didnât really do all the requirements.
But he got the degree.
And now heâs the Managing Director of Thiel Capital (Peter Thielâs investment firm). And heâs host of the new podcast âThe Portal.â
âWhat were your SAT scores?â I asked.
I wanted to find out if he was actually bad at math. Because he said this thing about learning disabilities.
He said, âA lot of parents have kids who are bright and smart and creative. And those kids are bringing home grades that are just so depressing. And the parents are pulling their hair out⌠In the standard sense, that population is probably [considered] learning disabled, but they are our future innovators.â
âWhy?â
âPeople become incredibly inventive when they become isolated and terrified.â
When Eric thought heâd fail college, he stopped taking French and the required courses.
He loaded up on math courses. And said, âI, at least, want to find out what the universe is about while Iâm here... and that turned out to pay off.â
